What is HIARO?
Hazard Identification, Assessment of Risk and Opportunity (HIARO) is a systematic method used to identify workplace hazards, evaluate associated risks, and determine potential opportunities to improve safety performance and operational outcomes. HIARO supports organizations in developing proactive controls that prevent incidents, ensure regulatory compliance, and strengthen their Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) framework.
In our training program, you’ll learn how to conduct effective hazard identification, assess risks using qualitative and quantitative approaches, and recognize opportunities that enhance safety, efficiency, and business resilience. The HIARO methodology is a key competency in modern safety management, applicable across various industrial and business sectors.
Why is HIARO important?
HIARO is essential because it enables organizations to reduce the likelihood of workplace injuries, illnesses, and operational disruptions. By systematically identifying hazards and evaluating risk levels, businesses can implement targeted controls that protect workers, lower operational costs, and support continuous improvement. Additionally, the integration of opportunity assessment allows organizations to enhance safety innovation, increase productivity, and reinforce a culture of proactive risk management.
Through our training, you will discover how the HIARO process strengthens compliance with occupational health and safety standards (including ISO 45001:2018), improves employee awareness and engagement, and contributes to a safer and more resilient workplace environment.
